Yes, Our pets are unable to stay completely still when obtaining imaging (or approached with sharp dental instruments), so administering medication that removes the risk of sudden movements is necessary. We also need to be able to secure the patient’s airway to safely use water in the mouth, which is only possible through general anesthesia. We take anesthesia very seriously here; your pet will be monitored continuously throughout the procedure as well as during induction and recovery.
All patients go home the same day. The time of discharge will be determined by where your pet lies in the surgery schedule order, the length of the surgery itself, and how quickly your pet recovers. Since the details above can be somewhat unpredictable, we recommend that you schedule your pet’s surgery on a day when you have flexibility.
We do! Trupanion Pet Insurance will compensate us directly; all other insurance companies will reimburse the policy holder after a completed procedure. Coverage varies widely between insurance companies and policies, so we recommend confirming your pet’s level of coverage through your insurance company prior to your appointment.
We recommend products that are VOHC certified, which are listed on the VOHC website. And remember: when choosing a chew toy for your pet, try to avoid anything that you can’t indent with your fingernail or wouldn’t want hit against your knee.
While we do not offer traditional financing, we do accept payment through the medical credit card Care Credit. More information on Care Credit (as well as general payment information) can be found on our payments page:
The “dental cleaning” is only part of the VDOSO experience; every surgical procedure here begins with a comprehensive oral and radiographic evaluation by a board-certified veterinary dentist (which includes 3D imaging with a Cone-Beam CT, full mouth dental radiographs, and an oral cancer screening), followed by periodontal therapy (which would fall under the “cleaning” portion of the procedure) and any necessary oral surgery/specialty treatments. Because dentistry in pets requires general anesthesia, VDOSO minimizes risk through tailored anesthetic plans (based on breed, age, and health condition), and constant monitoring by multiple registered veterinary technicians before, during, and after each procedure. Each estimate we give reflects the value of the details above and will usually fall somewhere between twenty-five hundred and sixty-five hundred dollars. If no oral surgery or specialty treatments are needed, then the cost will likely be on the lower end of that range. Long, complicated surgeries, or surgeries on large dogs, may be on the higher end.

Posted on Michelle AndersenMarch 7, 2026 Our Bullmastiff, Maia, had oral surgery with Dr. Berning at Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Ohio on 2/18/26. The surgery was needed for an oral mass that was in her upper mid- left jawline, involving some teeth. To say that we were nervous would be an understatement. Maia is a big part of our family and our lives. The minute we walked into Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Ohio our anxiety was drastically improved. The staff was absolutely amazing, friendly, professional, and understanding. Maia is a very social dog and immediately loved the staff as well. We had a consult with Dr. Berning after she did an oral exam, she was extremely confident that the surgery that she had planned would be effective and with minimal if any cosmetic complications. We were not concerned about the cosmesis, we just wanted the mass gone and we wanted to make sure we had a plan for pain control post-op. The procedure and the process was explained to us very well, Maia would have a 3D CT scan to assist with the size and depth of the mass, she would have a board certified anesthesiologist, and of course Dr. Berning and her team. We agreed to proceed with the plan. They would call us when we could come pick Maia up. YES, she was able to come home the same day, that was absolutely amazing! We left the office and we both said, "I feel good, they took the anxiety away." We received a call, we were able to pick Maia up, she was very alert, the best she has ever been post-op/ post- anesthesia. We were given a very good explanation of how the surgery went, given images from the 3D CT, pictures of before and after, excellent post-op instructions for pain management, antibiotic treatment, diet/ eating, activity, and post-op follow up. We did stay overnight in Hilliard that night, it made us humans feel better that we were close to the office if we needed anything. But we also stayed overnight because we traveled just over 4 hours to get to Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Ohio! YES, 4 hours, and it was worth it all, we would do it all again, if needed. We were called and given Maia's pathology report and what was needed in the future (yearly monitoring). Dr. Berning and her team nailed it, no further intervention needed at this time! I was in tears when Dr. Berning gave the report. We followed up with our Primary Veterinarian and everything is healing well. This is a long review, but if you are reading this and considering whether or not to go to Dr. Berning at Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Ohio, DO IT! You will not be sorry! We cannot recommend this office enough! Thank You!! The complete imaging and scans that were done revealed an issue with a previous procedure done elsewhere on a tooth. I could not be any happier with the care and treatment Mila received here ! Every staff member was exceptional from front desk to Dr. Berning herself. I absolutely love the fact that they have private rooms with small couches for comfort, while you wait for your pet to be treated. I would not hesitate to return here in the future ! Woman owned ! Great experience !Posted on Joselyn HerzogNovember 11, 2025 This facility took amazing care of our dog Cash. He was a high risk surgery due to his heart murmur and congenital heart disease but thanks to the amazing team and their anesthesiologists he is doing perfect and healing well. everyone was also very friendlyPosted on Erika S.October 12, 2025 I brought my cat Kitty Poo Poo all the from Cleveland for a dentistry appointment as my vet believed that she had oral cancer. Kitty was treated with the best care and the professionalism here is TOP TIER!! Kitty poo poo did have to have multiple teeth removed, a tooth was sent off for pathology and the results came back CANCER FREE!!!!! I would recommend this dentist office to all pet owners! They are very caring, knowledgeable and professional!!!!! 100/100Posted on Audrey LaivelingSeptember 25, 2025 We could not be more grateful to the team at Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Ohio. Our cat had stomatitis and was not eating much, and our vet tried to tell us that we'd have to keep him on antibiotics for the rest of his life and that he would eventually essentially die from the condition. We took our cat to Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery, and they recommended full mouth extraction. We were nervous, but they were so professional and knowledgeable. The full mouth extraction went smoothly, and they were great about fielding our questions and concerns during the recovery process. Now, four months later, our cat is worlds better. He's more playful and active, he's eating normally, and he's gone from underweight to downright chunky! We took him for a checkup at our vet, and the vet was amazed that the stomatitis is virtually gone. Even if the stomatitis comes back in some form at some point, the change in these past four months has been worth every penny. We could not recommend Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Ohio enough. Everyone that we interacted with treated us with care, compassion, and competence. Thank you so so much!Posted on Joch KelevraAugust 27, 2025 They performed surgery on my cat Isabel and all the team was so nice to my baby and us.Posted on Stacey DillionJuly 27, 2025 They are the most amazing group, and I’m so grateful for their care. The degree of compassion, knowledge, and obvious love for all furry friends is clear from the moment a visit is scheduled. They may have only seen our dog a few times, but it felt like they had known and cared for her all of her life. I couldn’t have asked for better discussion, procedural excellence, and follow up.Posted on Victoria BarbozaJune 23, 2025 November 2024. It’s hard to put into words just how extraordinary this team is. From the moment I scheduled Maggie’s appt for a root canal to the confirmation phone call and then of course the actual day of the treatment, these professionals were so attentive to our Maggie’s and our needs. They completely structured the appt to our convenience since we were coming from out of town and treated our highly anxious pitty like royalty. She has never come out of anesthesia as peaceful as she did after this treatment. To state they go above and beyond with their care is a MASSIVE understatement. I’m definitely going to be gushing about them for a while! Thank you Dr. Berning, Sarah and Heather for being so wonderful! And thank you to all of your team behind the scenes! June 2025. 1st follow-up after her initial procedure and it was a dream. While we could potentially opt for a closer vet dentist we are committed to driving 8 hours to Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Ohio because of their fantastic care of our Maggie! Oral care extends the life of our beloved fur babies and we know she is in the best of hands. They are so conscious, aware and cater to her anxiety needs so well that coming out of anesthesia is a breeze for her now whereas before it just seemed she suffered so much! They make sure she has no contact with dogs to minimize her reactivity and anxiety which I'm sure is no easy feat as their clients are literally all animals. We will be going back for her 2nd followup in January and probable for the rest of our Maggie's life! THANK YOU VDOSO! You are all AMAZING!
