Maxillofacial Imaging
Dental radiographs x-rays are 2D images that allow us to evaluate the structures below the gingival gum line. They show us bone height, disease of the structures around the tooth, disease of the tooth, disease within the tooth, and at the tip of the root of the tooth (the apex) such as abscessed teeth. In dogs and cats, the majority of the tooth is within the bone under the gumline. The roots (the part under the gums) are larger than the crowns (the visible part of the tooth) so we need to be able to appropriately evaluate these structures. Cone-beam CT (CBCT) is an imaging modality that allows us to evaluate the teeth and bone in 3D. We can see subtle changes of bone that cannot be detected by looking in the mouth or taking dental x-rays. We are the only veterinary clinic in Ohio to have a VetCAT table-side cone-beam CT. We are able to obtain a full 3D scan of the patient’s oral cavity in 30 seconds. The combination of 2D and 3D x-rays allows a comprehensive and thorough evaluation of oral disease in dogs and cats.
