Our Doctors

Dr. Jamie A. Berning

DVM, DAVDC

Dr. Jamie Berning is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College. Originally from northwest Ohio, she is a 2011 graduate from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing veterinary school she relocated to southeast Michigan and worked as a small animal general practice veterinarian. Realizing her passion for dentistry and oral surgery, she began working with veterinary dentists in the spring of 2013 and began a residency program months later. She spent 4 years working alongside veterinary dentists, and gained exposure to a variety of diagnostics, techniques, and knowledge before starting her own mobile practice based out of Columbus, Ohio in 2017. Dr. Berning became a board-certified veterinary dentist in 2019.

Dr. Berning's father and brother are both human dentists, and she has spent countless hours learning from, comparing techniques, and discussing cases with them. She has completed clinical hours with oral surgeons, periodontists, and a dental radiologist on the human-side, and enjoys comparative dentistry. Dr. Berning published an original research project using cone-beam CT, an advanced diagnostic imaging modality used commonly in human dentistry, to describe the three-dimensional relationship of mandibular molar teeth with the mandibular canal.

In 2014, Dr. Berning began presenting lectures and teaching dental extraction labs for veterinary students at Ohio State and Michigan State. She continues to enjoy teaching veterinary students. Realizing the lack of formal dental training in veterinary education, Dr. Berning started teaching wetlabs and lectures for veterinarians and technicians, and has found in-clinic training to be the most practical method for immediate application of veterinary dental knowledge and techniques.

Dr. Berning is passionate about zoo and wildlife dentistry and currently serves as a dental consultant for the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, Cincinnati Zoo, and Zoo Miami. She began presenting at the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians conference in 2019 and continues teaching lectures and labs at the AAZV conference. Additionally, Dr. Berning has served as an expert panelist for the American Veterinary Dental College discussing endodontic disease in exotic animals. Dr. Berning has worked with more than seventy species of animals including a variety of large cats, otters, bears, and primates!
